At the 2018 Annual Dinner & Awards Evening we presented the inaugural Lion Award. This award acknowledges younger old boys making their mark on the world at an early stage in their career. We selected Anthony Hoy-Fong ’91 from over a dozen nominations for his leadership, integrity, & commitment in his field, but also to the school.
Anthony attended Grammar from 91-95 and has continued to be a part of the Grammar community ever since. Following his time at AGS, Anthony studied business and science at the University of Auckland. He went on to work in programming and then began running the family business for a few years. Once the business was sold, he moved to New York to attend culinary school and pursue his dream of becoming a chef.
In New York, he completed a six month intensive course at the French Culinary Institute and went on to work for free in a top restaurant in London. A chance meeting with celebrity chef Tyler Florence saw him move into a role as a sous-chef with Florence. From here, Hoy Fong's business experience was utilised when he became the culinary director for Florence, managing his business, his appearances and helping develop recipes.
Before moving on to start his own business, Anthony had cooked for some of the biggest names in the world, including President Barack Obama. He spent a year creating Top Chef University, an online culinary school that provides video learning on cooking techniques and food preparation. Anthony has also appeared on many TV shows as both a chef and judge.
